In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

Coastal Ocean and Nearshore Observation: A French Case Study ArchiMer

To understand and predict the physical, chemical, and biological processes at play in coastal and nearshore marine areas requires an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. The case study of the French structuration of coastal ocean and nearshore observing systems provides an original overview on a federative research infrastructure named ILICO. It is a notable example of national structuration and pan-institution efforts to investigate the forefront of knowledge on the processes at work within the critical coastal zone. ILICO comprises, in a pluridisciplinary approach, eight distributed network-systems of observation and data analysis that are accredited and financially supported by French research institutions and the French Ministry for Higher...

Energetics of internal tides around the Kerguelen Plateau from modeling and altimetry ArchiMer
Maraldi, Claire; Lyard, Florent; Testut, Laurent; Coleman, Richard.
A barotropic tidal model, with a parameterization term to account for the internal wave drag energy dissipation, is used to examine areas of possible M(2) internal tide generation in the Kerguelen Plateau region. Barotropic energy flux and a distribution of wave drag dissipation are computed. The results suggest important conversion of barotropic energy into baroclinic tide generation over the northern Kerguelen Plateau shelf break, consistent with a theoretical criterion based on ocean stratification, tidal forcing frequency, and bathymetric gradients. The sea surface height signatures of time-coherent internal tides are studied using TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 altimeter data, whose ascending tracks cross nearly perpendicular to the eastern and western...

Ice wastage on the Kerguelen Islands (49 degrees S, 69 degrees E) between 1963 and 2006 ArchiMer
Berthier, Etienne; Le Bris, Raymond; Mabileau, Laure; Testut, Laurent; Remy, Frederique.
We observed the wastage of ice masses on the Kerguelen Islands ( Indian Ocean, 49 degrees S, 69 degrees E) using historical information and recent satellite data. Overall, the total ice-covered area on the islands declined from 703 to 552 km(2) between 1963 and 2001, a reduction of 21%. The area of Cook ice cap ( the main ice body) decreased asymmetrically from 501 to 403 km(2). West flowing glaciers lost 11% of their area, while east flowing glaciers lost 28%. After 1991, the retreat rate accelerated from 1.9 km(2)/a ( 1963-1991) to 3.8 km(2)/a ( 1991-2003). Between 1963 and 2000, the ice volume loss was 25-30 km(3), equivalent to an area-average ice-thinning rate of 1.4-1.7 m/a. The glacial retreat took place in the climatic context of a relatively low...

Performance of modern tide gauges: towards mm-level accuracy ArchiMer
Martin Miguez, Belen; Testut, Laurent; Woeppelmann, Guy.
Considerable efforts are being made worldwide to upgrade tide gauge networks using new technologies. Because of the unique location of the Kerguelen Islands, the measurement of sea level there has received particular attention, with up to four systems equipped with modern sensors functioning simultaneously (two pressure tide gauges, a radar tide gauge, and a GPS-equipped buoy). We analysed and compared the sea level data obtained with these systems from 2003 to 2010, together with a time series of tide pole observations. This is the first time that a multi-comparison study with tide gauges has been undertaken over such a long time span and that the stability of modern radar tide gauges has been examined. The multi-comparison enabled us to evaluate the...

The Van de Casteele test revisited: An efficient approach to tide gauge error characterization ArchiMer
Miguez, Belen Martin; Testut, Laurent; Woppelmann, Guy.
The classical question of metrology related to the quality of the tide gauge measurements has become more important this last decade or so as new technologies have emerged and tide gauge networks are modernized. The Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) target of 1-cm accuracy in the individual sea level measurement is motivated by more demanding applications than the traditional hydrographic works and tide predictions, for instance, the monitoring of the long-term trends in sea level or the calibration of satellite radar altimeters. To examine and further assess the performance of modern tide gauge measurements, the Van de Casteele test is revisited. This test is based on a diagram plotting readings taken with a reference probe against the tide gauge...

A major challenge for managing impacts and implementing effective mitigation measures and adaptation strategies for coastal zones affected by future sea level (SL) rise is our limited capacity to predict SL change at the coast on relevant spatial and temporal scales. Predicting coastal SL requires the ability to monitor and simulate a multitude of physical processes affecting SL, from local effects of wind waves and river runoff to remote influences of the large-scale ocean circulation on the coast. Here we assess our current understanding of the causes of coastal SL variability on monthly to multi-decadal timescales, including geodetic, oceanographic and atmospheric aspects of the problem, and review available observing systems informing on coastal SL. We...
